Is 'race' and 'open and shut case'? Can you judge a book by its cover? Where does appearance-ism lead?
RACE: AN OPEN and SHUT CASE by Anya Cordell is a unique double-sided book for kids and adults.
Read either side first, then flip the book over, to discover the stories of the Open and Shut families. Their answers to an apparently simple question will turn your presumptions about 'race' and appearance-based values upside-down, literally!
Comments from readers:
"You inspired me to change my first impression of people."--An eighth grade student "Your work is awesome and commendable. You should be cloned."--An adult workshop participant "The story was very well done and had a nice idea of flipping the book over, kind of like flipping your views on racism."--A seventh grade student

Now available, on CD, an audio-essay, with a tragic link
to appearance-ism: This personally narrated audio documentary details some tragic consequences of appearance-based judging, from a uniquely compelling perspective.
The events of September 11, 2001 led me further in my fight against appearance-based judging and violence. In the wake of 9/11 there has been a wave of attacks against innocent Arabs, Muslims, South Asians, and others, in acts of vandalism, arson, assault, and even murder--based solely on appearance. I am a Jewish woman. I didn't know any of the victims. Yet I felt compelled to stand against this irrational hate-backlash, this terrible injustice.
I founded the Campaign for Collateral Compassion, to support the families of those who were murdered. I had incredible encounters with remarkable people on this journey, particularly the families of Sikh and Hindu victims.
In the CD, audio-essay, I explain how I became so passionately involved in this issue. The story of my own early obsession with appearance unfolds. My tale leads listeners to discover their own righteous indignation and passion around the topic of appearance-based judging.
One listener wrote: "It really is a remarkable work and I felt rather transformed by the end."
Women, teens, minorities, and those who are most affected by the tremendous emphasis and value that our culture puts upon appearance have found this CD truly impactful. Jewish listeners also find this narration profoundly moving and inspiring. After hearing this powerful story, you will not think of your own appearance, or that of anyone else, the same again. You will be moved to change the world, instead of your wrinkles (your waistline, or...whatever).
